His ancestors were Gandhi (business grocery) by profession, but none of them had done Gandhi's business in the previous three generations, and he was somehow the prince of the princely state. Mohandas Gandhi's father, Karamchand Gandhi, was also a Devan of Porbandar State. Besides, he was also a Diwan of Rajkot and Wankaner. According to the Vaishnava tradition, the Gandhi family was a strict vegetarian. Mohandas was married to Kasturba at the age of only 5 because of the practice of child marriage prevailing in Hindus. Mohandas Gandhi had four sons; The eldest son Harilal (born Sun 8), followed by Manilal (born Sun 7), followed by Ramdas (born Sun 3) and the youngest son Devdas (born Sun 7).
Until his youth, Gandhi was a very ordinary student. They were initially studied in Porbandar and later in Rajkot. After completing his matriculation exam, he joined the University of Bombay in Shamdas College for higher studies. However, it did not last there. Many of his family members were employed in high positions in Gujarat. The desire of their families was to become a barrister in order to maintain such a family orientation. It was only then that he got a chance to study in England. Also, because of the British rule in India, they believed that England was the land of thinkers and poets and England was the center of the Tehzeeb. Thus he seized this opportunity to travel to England.
