More recent French loanwords keep the -re spelling in American English. These are not exceptions when a French-style pronunciation is used (/rə/ rather than /ə(r)/), as with double entendre, genre and oeuvre. Many words, especially medical words, that are written with ae/æ or oe/œ in British English are written with just an e in American English.
